Frequently Asked Questions
Q&A about Starting and Running a Fan Club
What is a digital fan club?
A digital fan club is a members-only website that energizes fans with your stories, photos, videos, discounts, and more. Fans become a part of your journey. You fundraise by selling memberships. It’s a great way to win more fans and raise more money at the same time!
What is Be The Fan?
Be The Fan is a service that makes it easy for your organization to have its own digital fan club. We help you win more fans and raise more money with ease. Once your digital fan club is set up, everyone in your organization – from youngest to oldest – can easily and safely sell fan club memberships via email, text, social, etc.
Your organization will love having a fan club, and your fans will love it even more!
Be The Fan was started by Nancy Tunick, a music industry veteran and busy mom of two active young people. Nancy saw the opportunity to make fan clubs, common for musicians, the premier way to build community and raise money for youth sports and arts organizations. Nancy shares her story in this video.
How is a fan club different from social media?
Did you know that when you post on a site like Facebook only 10-15% of your followers see your post? It’s often 1-2%, unless you pay to promote a post. So your supporters miss most of the news and updates that you want to share with them. In contrast, Be The Fan lets your supporters know every time you post a story, photo or video. Be The Fan keeps your fans informed and engaged. Your fans appreciate being a part of your organization’s journey, and seeing how their money is being used to benefit the young people they care about.
What are the benefits?
There are many benefits to having a digital fan club. For your organization’s fundraising leaders we make life simple: just fill out this form. We’ll then reach out for a little information, such as a logo and a photo, and we’ll set up your fan club for free. This takes about a week. For the young people in your organization, it’s fun and motivating to have a fan club, and it’s easy for them to sell memberships to friends and family using email, text, social, etc. We offer you a simple way to win more fans and raise more money with ease!
How much money can we raise?
This depends on the effort, however we believe that most youth organizations can easily, safely and more enjoyably raise more money with a Be The Fan digital fan club than by selling products that people may not want or need. Here’s a simple way to estimate how much money your organization may be able to raise:
Multiply…
the price you will charge for your fan club membership (we recommend $25-50 for most youth organizations, however lower or higher pricing is sometimes better — we can help you decide what’s best)
by…
the number of memberships each young person in your organization is expected to sell
by…
the number of young people in your organization
by…
80% (your organization keeps 80%, and Be The Fan keeps 20% to cover the costs of building and maintaining your digital fan club on our platform, inclusive of all hosting and credit card service fees)
to get…
The total net amount received by your organization.
For example, if you charge $35 for each fan club membership, your organization has 30 young people and each young person sells 8 memberships, and you keep 80%, then you raise $6,720! We can help you adjust your pricing and outreach to meet your fundraising goals. Sell more to make more! And keep in mind that you can sell memberships – to win new fans and raise more money – throughout your season.
How should we price our fan club memberships?
It’s up to you! A fan club membership is a one-time fee (not a subscription) for a single season. $25-50 for a membership is common, and Be The Fan lets each person signing up for a membership add an additional donation if they want. Your fan club’s membership fee depends on your particular situation, such as your fundraising goal, how many young people will be promoting memberships to their friends and family, and other factors. We’re happy to make suggestions and help you decide what’s best for your organization.
What does it take to run my fan club?
Be The Fan‘s friendly team will set up your digital fan club for free, help get you started, and be there for you if you have any questions along the way. In general, running a fan club is fun and rewarding. Your job is to gather content – stories, updates, photos, videos – that you want to share with your organization’s fan club members, and then share this content by posting it to your private fan club page.
The posting process is similar to uploading content to social media. We will guide you through it, provide a ‘cheat sheet’ summary of the steps for reference, and be available if you have any questions. Our job is to help you make your fan club and fundraising a big success!
